OMT is a non-invasive physical therapy applied by manipulations of both soft and hard tissues. The holistic approach of osteopathic assessment creates an understanding of the biodynamic relationships which reveal the underlying cause of discomfort and dysfunction. From this understanding, the application of osteopathic treatment facilitates the body's ability to return to an expression of health. Assessment and treatment focuses on the relationship between structures and their function. When function is restored, there is liberation of the cardiovascular, neurological and lymphatic systems which coordinate the agents within the body to promote self-healing and self-regulation.
Osteopathy was a discovery made by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in the mid-to-late 19th century. Still had apprenticed to become a Medical Doctor, while years in practice led him to become frustrated with the existing approaches to mainstream medicine. Through observation, Still recognized nature's innate ability to express both health and disease, based on structural circumstances. This revealed to Still a philosophical approach which he then applied to the human body. Osteopathy is not a defined technical application, rather a philosophy governed by principles of natural law which are considered when using manual therapy as an intervention.
